The Green Album

I love tribute albums.
It’s fun when one artist pays homage to acts that may have influenced them, such as Metallica’s Garage Inc. It’s even more fun when the artist does music that’s not traditionally arranged in that performers chosen style (Richard Cheese and Me First & the Gimme Gimmes are two of my favorite acts).  But my favorites are the compilation albums such as A Fair Forgery of Pink Floyd, or Nightmare Revisited.
So, the Green Album is pretty much up my alley.
A tribute album to the Muppets and their music.
Thanks to NPR, you can listen to the album in its entirety here:

Track list as follows:
1. OK Go – Muppet Show Theme
2. Weezer and Paramore’s Hayley Williams – Rainbow Connection
3. The Fray – Mahna Mahna
4. Alkaline Trio – Moving Right Along
5. My Morning Jacket – Our World
6. Sondre Lerche – Mr. Bassman
7. Amy Lee – Halfway Down the Stairs
8. The Airborne Toxic Event – Wishing Song
9. Atreyu’s Brandon Saller and Good Charlotte’s Billy Martin – Night Life
10. Andrew Bird – Bein’ Green
11. Matt Nathanson – I Hope That Something Better Comes Along
12. Rachael Yamagata – I’m Going to Go Back There Someday

Mahna Mahna is a bit more of a ‘cover’ than a ‘tribute’… unfortunate; I would’ve liked to have heard The Fray’s interpretation of that seminal arrangement, rather than hearing how well they impersonate the original. Bein’ Green is on the flip side of that; I’m not over fond of the song, but Andrew Bird does a fine job infusing it with his own style. And Saller/Martin’s Night Life?  That just fricken rocks.  Lots-0-fun.
But maybe the best track on here, for me anyway, is OK Go’s version of the Muppet Show Theme. It’s a bit off-pitch… not so much that it becomes a distraction– but enough that those happy memories of watching the TV show are poking you in the back of the head, saying, wait a minute… something’s not quite right.  And you start looking around for Sweetums with a pocket watch and an agenda, or Gonzo & company in the midst of an Un-birthday party.
Yus. Is very well done.
