Free Solo Up Half Dome

[minor update] It has been brought to my attention that I never mentioned the climber’s name. doh
Alex Honnold

This kid (26; from my perspective, that’s a kid) is a free solo artist– that is, he climbs without protection. No harness, no ropes, no safety net. Just him, a pair of shoes and a bag of chalk. And, of course, gravity.
60 Minutes has done a story on his ascent up Half Dome’s northwest face.
The degree of disconnect that requires is amazing. To be hundreds of feet off the deck, and be confidant and focused enough to hang from one’s finger tips…
Thinking about it makes my sphincter clench. Watching the footage of him actually doing it wigs me out a bit.
But the kid’s good… and I respect both his ability, and his resolve.
